The Transgender Aging Network (TAN) exists to improve the lives of current and future trans/SOFFA (Significant Others, Friends, Family and Allies) elders by:

  • Identifying, promoting communication among, and enhancing the work of researchers, service providers, educators, advocates, elders and others who are interested in trans/SOFFA aging issues;
  • Promoting awareness of concerns, issues, and realities of trans/SOFFA aging among service providers, researchers, advocates, health care professionals, the lesbian/gay/bisexual and trans communities, and other relevant audiences;
  • Advocating for policy changes in public and private institutions, services, organizations, programs, etc. to provide better access for and respectful and appropriate treatment of trans/SOFFA elders; and
  • Providing communication channels through which trans/SOFFA elders can give and receive support and information.

TAN is a proud partner in the federal-government funded National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, headed by SAGE.

TAN membership is free. We offer two listservs, and our numerous publications are available for free download. We can offer onsite training, provide assistance in making publications and training materials inclusive, and set up one-time or ongoing expert consultations for your staff for a negotiated fee.

Aging Listservs

TAN offers two international, free listservs.

Despite its name, the TAN Professionals’ listserv is open to everyone. However, the focus is on providing support and information to those who work with, serve, advocate for, or research transgender elders and SOFFAs. This low-volume listserv offers periodic news and announcements, and disseminates approved survey calls. It also is intended to function as an avenue for professionals to obtain informed and practical technical assistance on transgender (aging) topics; if you have a question, this is where you can take your curiosity. To subscribe, sign up here or send an email explicitly requesting a TAN Professionals’ Listserv subscription to Loree Cook-Daniels (LoreeCD@forge-forward.org).

ElderTG: An email list for TGs 50+ & SOFFAs

ElderTG is a support and networking e-mail list for both MTF and FTM transsexual, transgender, and intersex persons aged 50 and older and SOFFAs (significant others, friends, family, and allies) of such persons. Both those who have been dealing with transgender/gender issues for a long time and those who are new to the issues are welcome. ElderTG serves as the primary source of support for a number of its members, and hence has a high volume of emails daily. A digest option that groups all of a day’s emails and sends them in one daily email is available.

ElderTG is moderated by Robyn and Dan. To subscribe, send an email stating your age and interest to eldertg-subscribe@groups.onlinepolicy.net. Questions can be directed to Robyn (robynmw@twc.com) and/or  Dan (danmouer@fastmail.fm).

Note that ElderTG is a confidential list in that its members are asked not to cross-post (without explicit permission of the original poster) to other lists and not to discuss the names of other subscribers with non-subscribers. Those who are discovered to have violated these rules will be unsubscribed. However, these measures are not foolproof. Subscribers and potential subscribers who are concerned about their privacy are *strongly* urged to subscribe to the list using (and continue to consistently use) an email address and name different from their real name and usual e-mail address.
