November 27, 2018 is Giving Tuesday, an excellent time to set up a recurring small (or large!) donation to your favorite trans-focused organization. Here are some national ones to consider:
FORGE is the nation’s leading transgender anti-violence organization. Go to our main website, https://forge-forward.org, and look for the donate button at top right of every webpage. You can also support us if you buy from Amazon by using the smileamazon.com website and designating FORGE as your preferred charity.
The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) is without a doubt trans and non-binary individuals’ most effective policy advocacy organization. To support them (we do!), go to https://transequality.org. They also have a donate button at top right of every webpage.
Trans Lifeline is a suicide prevention hotline specifically for trans and non-binary individuals who need crisis support: https://www.translifeline.org/donate
If you don’t want to pick a particular trans organization to support, consider a trans-specific grantmaking foundation that will do the vetting for you:
- Trans Justice Funding Project gave out $500k to small, grassroots trans organizations last year: https://www.transjusticefundingproject.org/ You can contribute here, but note that because its model funds organizations without all their government-mandated paperwork, your donations are not tax deductible: https://www.tfaforms.com/369883
- The Jim Collins Foundation provides grants to individuals to fund gender affirmation surgeries they otherwise could not access: https://jimcollinsfoundation.org/
Keep in mind that many local trans/non-binary organizations are small and would welcome any level of support you can offer. If you aren’t able to support with a cash contribution, consider volunteering your time, donating supplies or other resources an organization may have on their wish list.
Don’t forget to check if your employer matches employee donations!
