Did you know that 6-27% of youth age 12-18 identify as non-binary (Williams Institute, 2017)? Or, that in the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, 35% of the 27,715 survey respondents identified as non-binary. Clearly, a growing proportion of the trans+ community is made up of people who do not identify as either male or female.
Some people are amazed to know that some public policies are catching up. In fact, that’s what this action step is all about: please spread the word! Many non-binary people have no clue that their state recognizes their gender identity. At least 12 jurisdictions now recognize a non-binary identity, with additions coming rapidly: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Washington, D.C. States that have passed legislation that is yet to take effect are New Hampshire (effective January 1, 2020); Rhode Island, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania (effective July 1, 2020); and Illinois (sometime in 2024).
Find out if your state has identity documents that make room for people who identify as a gender other than male or female. Check into if your city has a Municipal ID with multiple gender options. What about your employer? Or the forms at your providers’ offices? Consider encouraging places that have limited options for marking gender to expand to include people of ALL genders.
Take Action!
