Working with Trans and Non-Binary Clients: Empowering Wisconsin Mental Health Providers (Wed)

December 5, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Unfortunately this training has been canceled. Stay tuned for rescheduled dates.

This all day training for therapists and other behavioral health providers will enhance the skills of both experienced therapists and those new to working with trans and non-binary individuals.

Taught from the perspectives of two professional trainers with more than 50 years’ experience in the trans community, this interactive and workshop is well-grounded in the lived realities of being trans/non-binary and emphasizes practical and concrete strategies and resources – both local and national – that can help smooth trans/non-binary individuals’ paths.

Providers will gain an expansive view of gender beyond the binary of male/female – providing a new paradigm which will aid in empowering trans clients on a path of self-determination and self–empowerment.  Attendees will learn about the many layers of challenges and resiliencies that trans clients may bring into a provider’s office, including the impact of early childhood trauma; anti-transgender microaggressions, discrimination, and violence; and the impact of systems-based pathologizing which can impact individuals’ agency and confidence.

Participants will expand their knowledge of trans-specific issues clients may bring to therapy, as well as leave with a better understanding the territory(ies) you and your client may navigate together, including:

  • working within informed consent and standards of care frameworks,
  • assisting clients with paperwork to access hormones/surgery/document change, and
  • enriching resilience during times when trans rights are being challenged on many levels.

Everyone will leave with a reference binder of local and national resources and best practice guides.
