Pronouns! Mini-series

October 15, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

In these six short podcast-sized segments, participants will learn about the basics of pronouns and gain some practical skills in how to improve pronoun use with trans and non-binary clients, colleagues, and friends.

Part 1: Pronouns 101

This segment reviews what pronouns are, the basics of pronoun grammar, the unconscious process of how our brains quickly assign a pronoun to someone, the importance of shifting our automatic brain processing, and a quick review of gender identity and gender expression.

Part 2: They/them pronouns

This segment reviews the singular they pronoun, who uses them.  A review of myths and facts about they/them pronouns rounds out this podcast.

Part 3: How to ask pronouns

This segment shares examples of how to ask someone’s pronouns, what some common barriers are to asking, and how to practice the process of asking.  We also briefly discuss intake forms and other ways of asking, including some nuances about situation-specific pronoun use.

Part 4: Practicing

This segment offers five practical strategies for practicing using peoples’ correct pronouns.

Part 5: Messing up!

We all mess up a person’s pronouns some times!  There are two quick reminders of what not to do, followed by three primary strategies of what you CAN do when you mess up.

Part 6: When someone else messes up

This segment reminds us to check in with the people in our lives before we might correct someone else’s use of pronouns for that person.  It offers three practical ways of responding if someone else makes an error in addressing someone by their correct pronoun.
