NSAC 2015: Expanding LGBTQ Access – VAWA’s New Non-Discrimination Provisions

September 3, 2015 @ 10:45 am - 12:15 pm

We look forward to seeing you at the 2015 National Sexual Assault Conference, September 2 – 4 in Los Angeles, CA.

Workshop Title

Expanding LGBTQ Access – VAWA’s New Non-Discrimination Provisions

Workshop Description:

On March 7, 2013, after years of advocacy, President Obama signed the re-authorized Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which included non-discrimination provisions on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity for the first time in federal law.  In April of 2014, the OVW issued FAQ’s interpreting these provisions and what it meant for VAWA recipients.   This session will explore those requirements and engage the audience in conversation on what has worked and where have been the challenges in implementation.

1. Understand the new federal non-discrimination requirements for serving LGBTQ survivors.
2. Utilize knowledge gained from this session to bring back to their programs to expand access to LGBTQ survivors of sexual assault.
3. Have information to access resources, including technical assistance and training, to increase their program’s effectiveness in serving the LGBTQ community.
