Come on in: Improving skills to welcome trans survivors into shelter (and other services)

September 15, 2016

A training for the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) does not discriminate on the basis of gender identity or gender expression.  (Shelters shouldn’t either!)  This practical training will engage participants to improve their knowledge and skills in respectfully serving and sheltering transgender and non-binary survivors.  Trans-specific data will guide discussions about prevalence, barriers to accessing services, as well as uncovering some of the unique challenges transgender survivors face.

Deep discussion through dynamic exercises will explore the challenges and rewards of shifting away from traditionally or formerly sex-segregated services and how to best integrate and provide equal, respectful services for transgender survivors and loved ones. Attendees will leave feeling empowered, with clear and direct practical steps on how to increase their agency’s accessibility, cultural competency, and welcome to transgender survivors of intimate partner violence.

Attendees will be able to:

  1. State 3 trans-specific DV/SA prevalence rates or other trans-specific data.
  2. List 3 common barriers transgender survivors often face when seeking services following intimate partner violence.
  3. Identify 3 immediate steps and 2 long term goals to better serve transgender survivors.
  4. Understand and be able to implement practical strategies for equally and respectfully serving transgender survivors in previously or currently sex-segregated settings.
