Artist Statement / Background:

FORGE is a national organization focused on improving the lives of transgender individuals by building stronger connections, providing resources, and empowering growth through knowledge. FORGE’s Espavo Project is based from the word, Espavo, which means “Thank you for taking your power.” The project aims to embody the resilience, empowerment and healing of transgender, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary survivors and loved ones whose lives have been affected by sexual violence.

Multiple photographers, from different artistic backgrounds, contributed to this collection, capturing participants in venues that include transgender-focused conferences, outdoor LGBT Pride festivals, public parks, and private home settings. Each photographer worked closely with the participants to capture them exactly how they felt most comfortable and most empowered. At times this meant capturing a tattoo, the side of a face, hugging partners or animals, or changing the photo to black and white. Although the project’s primary purpose is to help empower and heal trans survivors and loved ones, a secondary goal is the public sharing of photos at gallery exhibits, through social media, and in training presentations, which allows others to benefit from and resonate with the experiences of trans survivors and loved ones. A common goal of both objectives is to help trans survivors, loved ones, and community members feel less isolated and alone.

The participants were volunteers from all socioeconomic, race, age, dis/ability, and gender and sexuality vectors. While some identify as survivors of sexual violence, others are loved ones and supporters of trans, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary survivors of sexual violence. Some participants added “resiliency quotes” to their photos while others opted for their bodies or expressions to be their resilience contribution to the project.

The Espavo Project is ongoing, with new photos being added to the collection. To view additional photos, visit our Zenfolio page at http://forge.zenfolio.com/ or follow us on Instagram (@FORGE_forward) using the #EspavoProject.
