Anti-Transgender Bathroom Bills: When Legislation Provokes Fear Not Safety (NSAC)

June 8, 2017 @ 1:45 pm - 3:15 pm

A workshop at the National Sexual Assault Conference

Increasing numbers of states and localities are proposing legislation to restrict or eliminate the right of transgender people to use public bathrooms or locker rooms. Sexual assault agencies across the country are asking what they can do to both support transgender communities and counter myths about sexual assault linkages to transgender rights. This workshop will help organizations effectively respond to the false charges that trans people’s rights threaten women’s and children’s safety, offering suggested strategies that compassionately address peoples’ fears and introduce factual data about sexual assault, prevention, and bystander intervention.  We will also explore how transgender sexual assault survivors are negatively impacted by public votes on their basic human rights and repeated accusations of being sexual predators.
