The Health Report: Resilience and Disparities Among LGBT Older Adults and Caregivers

Friday March 30, 2012: 8:00 AMĀ  – 9:30 AM

This session will provide critical knowledge on health and aging of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults and caregivers. Based on the first ever national project funded by NIH/NIA, findings reveal resilience and health disparities in LGBT communities. Strategies for developing services and policies to address the health and aging needs for LGBT elders will be presented.

1. Differentiate health and wellness issues impacting specific subgroups in LGBT communities.
2. Identity key competencies addressing the service needs of LGBT older adults and caregivers.
3. Develop skills to effectively advocate for public policies to meet the health needs of LGBT older adults

Among LGBT older adults, nearly half are disabled and almost one-third report depression. More than two-thirds have experienced verbal insults and 40% physical violence, which are important risk factors impacting health. Among transgender older adults, 22% needed to see a doctor but did not due to cost. The majority reported feeling good about belonging to their communities, and three-quarters had social support available. Two-thirds reported the need for senior housing, social events and transportation to meet their aging needs. The project successfully details the health and wellness of older adults by sexual orientation, gender identity, age, income, race, ethnicity and geographic location. Based on these findings public policy recommendations and strategies are outlined to effectively reach hidden populations.
