Day 8 – Practice random acts of kindness

Practice random acts of kindness

The past several weeks and months leading up to the presidential election have been difficult for most of us.  Many of us are exhausted and stressed, living with high anticipation and concern about the outcome.  We have heard hard and painful words.   Many are taking care of themselves by reducing media consumption or avoiding conversations about politics.

Today, we encourage you to follow the bumper sticker we’ve all seen: “Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.”

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Offer to babysit for a friend so they can go vote (or go for a child-free meal)
  • Write positive quotes on Post-it notes and leave them on the mirrors of public restrooms
  • Bring cupcakes to share with classmates
  • Leave a simple kind note on the windshield of a car parked near yours
  • Share your music / headset with your subway or bus seatmate
  • Offer a co-worker a piece of gum
  • Look through your phone photos and email images to the people who are in them (add an uplifting comment, as simple as “remember when…”)
  • Compliment an acquaintance
  • Find every opportunity to say thank you and please
  • Rake your neighbor’s yard
  • Skype or FaceTime with your neblings (nieces, nephews, and other young humans in your life)
  • Buy coffee for the person behind you in line
  • Read an extra 15 minutes to your child (or someone else’s)
  • Make eye contact with people and smile as you walk down the street
  • Call a friend just to say hello
  • Take that trip to Goodwill (or donate your gently used clothes to a trans organization)
  • Text your friends to tell them something you value about them
  • Share a book you’ve enjoyed with a family member
  • Ask everyone you interact with their name and pronoun (after sharing yours)
  • Take an extra 15 minutes to show kindness to yourself with a long bath or shower
  • Offer to take a photo of people who are struggling to take a selfie
  • Listen without interrupting
  • Open your arms to share your love for someone with a tight hug
