New Guide for Transgender Survivors Accessing Therapy

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, FORGE is proud to announce the online publication of Let’s Talk About It! A Transgender Survivor’s Guide to Accessing Therapy, available at

This 107-page document is a groundbreaking guide aimed specifically at transgender survivors of sexual assault (50-66% of all trans people have experienced sexual assault) but that will be useful to non-survivors, as well (including victim service providers and therapists). Topics include:

  • Healing options in addition to or instead of talk therapy
  • How to decide whether and when therapy is right for you
  • Deciding which is more important if you have to choose: trauma-informed or trans-savvy therapist?
  • Types of therapy and therapists
  • Finding referrals
  • Ruling out physical conditions
  • Screening (and re-evaluating) therapists
  • Unique issues facing transgender sexual assault survivors in therapy
    • Meeting complex needs in basic service systems
    • Intersectionality
    • Standards of Care issues
    • Disclosure
    • Shame
    • Body image and body dysphoria
    • Sex-segregated services
  • FORGE services and supports for both survivors and professionals

Let’s Talk About It! A Transgender Survivor’s Guide to Accessing Therapy is the first of a series of self-help guides FORGE will be issuing this year addressed to sexual assault survivors who are transgender, gender non-binary, or SOFFA (Significant Others, Friends, Family, and Allies).
