Transgender Bodies/Psyches: Medically Navigating (and advocating for) Trans Survivors

May 20, 2014 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Description: Navigating medical services and advocacy with transgender survivors may be uncharted territory for forensic nurses and advocates. Through expanding transgender conceptual frameworks, experiential workshop content will focus on trans-specific barriers, body geography and disconnect(s), with an emphasis on facilitating empowerment-based choices for trans survivors. Participants will leave with practical tools for improving services to transgender survivors.

Objectives:
1. Name at least two important principles that should guide all work with trans sexual assault survivors
2. List three possible differences of transgender bodies vs. non-transgender bodies
3. Identify at least one way to empower transgender survivors in making positive choices in their post-assault care that encourages respect of their own body
4. State where they can get more information, technical assistance, or support around trans SA survivors
