June 8 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

A workshop at the National Sexual Assault Conference

Presented by Just Detention International

Linda McFarlane, Deputy Executive Director, JDI

Morgan Givens, Program Officer, JDI

JDI Survivor Council Member

Transgender Prisoner Advocate
Transgender people are incarcerated at higher rates than other people, and once inside, face unacceptable risk of sexual abuse and harassment. Often forgotten and marginalized, transgender survivors of sexual abuse have been some of the most powerful advocates in the work to end sexual abuse in detention. During this interactive workshop, participants will learn about the experiences of incarcerated transgender people, hear some of their stories of survival and triumph, and learn strategies to support and advocate for them. Participants will also learn about the protections for transgender people within the Prison Rape Elimination Act, protections that transgender people themselves helped to ensure. Survivor testimony, discussion, and scenarios will be used to engage, inform, and learn from participants.
