Trans Youth Sexual Assault Survivors: Skills for Advocates (WCSAP)

Description:

What are some of the unique considerations in working with trans and gender non-binary youth who have experienced sexual assault? Join this webinar to gain practical skills in working with trans/gender non-binary survivors who are pre-teens and teens. Content will address unique issues and strategies of working with both trans youth from supportive family structures and youth who do not have stable home or school environments. Topics will include: barriers to accessing services, youth-specific confidentiality and privacy concerns, the role of bullying and sexual assault, polyvictimization and interectionality that may result in other risk factors or vulnerabilities, increasing youth autonomy and agency, and the role of restrictive legislative initiatives that impact trans youth lives.   Sample role plays will be integrated throughout the webinar.

 

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • Identify barriers specific to trans youth accessing sexual assault services
  • Understand the complexity polyvictimization and intersectionality and youth-specific victimization risks
  • Have increased confidence in interacting with trans youth survivors

 

Presenter Bio:

michael munson is the co-founder and Executive Director of FORGE, an organization focused on improving the lives of transgender individuals by building stronger connections, providing resources, and empowering growth through knowledge. FORGE is a national training and technical assistance provider funded through the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women. munson’s educational background is in psychology, with an emphasis on trauma-informed care and non-traditional healing modalities. His work on violence against trans and gender non-binary individuals stresses the intersectionality between complex components of identity, experience, and societal constructs that can both spur violence, as well as catalyze healing for individuals and communities. He is passionate about engaging professionals to embrace these complexities and learn key skills to better serve their clients/constituents.
