Digging Deeper: Healing for Trans* Survivors and Systems

May 14, 2014 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

This workshop is part of the PCAR/NSVRC’s Second Annual LGBTQ Summit. Please see http://www.pcar.org for more information, or access their registration page at: https://netforum.avectra.com/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?Site=PCAR&WebCode=EventDetail&evt_key=ad7fc20a-f73f-4a7c-9c9b-0b118143eae9

Sexual assault victim service systems are often structurally not able to effectively and respectfully work with transgender and gender non-conforming survivors.  The end result, as many providers and survivors know all too well, is that trans* survivors are not able to access services and/or are re-victimized when seeking support.  Trans* survivors are left without a supportive framework within which they can gain resources, tools, and ultimately healing.  One half of the workshop will be devoted to the structural and systemic barriers; the other half to the specific challenges for trans* survivors related to wholeness (vs. identity).  Workshop participants will be guided through exercises to think more deeply about the impact of macro-, meso-, and micro-aggressions; as well as learning skills to confront bias on both individual and systemic levels.  Attendees will engage in challenging interactions about embodied wholeness for trans* survivors, addressing what it means to step beyond gender identity, name and pronouns, and towards a place of honoring the complexity of trans* lives, survivorship, and healing.

  1. Identify one example of macro-, meso-, and micro-aggressions that trans* survivors may experience when accessing sexual assault services.
  2. Learn one concrete way to confront bias (between clients, from other staff, or from larger systems).
  3. Expand understanding of the complexity of trans* survivors lives.

michael munson is the co-founder and Executive Director of FORGE, an organization focused on improving the lives of transgender individuals by building stronger connections, providing resources, and empowering growth through knowledge. FORGE is a national training and technical assistance provider funded through the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women. Munson’s educational background is in psychology, with an emphasis on trauma-informed care and non-traditional healing modalities. His work on violence against transgender and gender non-conforming individuals stresses the intersectionality between complex components of identity, experience, and societal constructs that can both spur violence, as well as catalyze healing for individuals and communities. He is passionate about engaging professionals to embrace these complexities and learn key skills to better serve their clients/constituents.
