Changing in the Blink of an Eye: Public Policy Affecting Transgender Elders

March 24, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

@ The American Society on Aging Conference
The U.S. has never seen a stigmatized minority achieve policy advances as fast as the transgender community has over the past half-decade. Using a fun game show presentation style, this fast-paced training will teach you what you need to know to help your transgender elder clients access the benefits and protections they probably don’t know they now have. Basic transgender cultural competency is a prerequisite.
1. Name at least five areas in which new rights and protections have been instituted benefiting transgender older adults;
2. Identify at least three of the federal agencies that are accepting complaints of discrimination on behalf of transgender elders;
3. Identify at least three national advocacy organizations working on behalf of transgender older adults.
Outcomes:Since 2008, transgender people have won new rights regarding employment, education, veterans benefits, Social Security, identification changes, housing, marriage, and much, much more. New programs and resources have been developed specifically designed to improve services and supports to transgender elders. This well-reviewed workshop provides a fun way to learn what the new changes are and how they can be used to improve the lives of transgender elders.
