American Society on Aging: Sex-Segregated Services

March 30, 2012 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Navigating Sex-Segregated Services for Transgender and Non-Transgender Elders

Friday March 30, 2012: 11:30 AM  – 12:30 PM

This workshop will help participants think through the options they can offer their clients–transgender and non-transgender–when faced with sex- or gender-

segregated services. The workshop will include experiential exercises, a decision tree/flow-chart, and a schema that outlines response options ranging from creative adaptations to make existing services fit to wholesale dismantlement of gender-based service systems.

1. Participants will be able to list at least three reasons sex-segregated services exist.
2. Participants will be able to discuss some of the responses people may have when they’re asked to fit into 1 of 2 boxes, neither of which fit.
3. Participants will be able to name some of the philosophical approaches agency personnel may display toward clients who are different from their usual clients.
4. Participants will be able to use a (provided) flow chart to help think through a client’s service options.
5. Participants will be able to articulate some of the barriers transgender older adults might face in accessing services.
6. Participants will be able to name at least 3 alternative ways to meet an elder’s needs when he or she isn’t eligible for a service due to sex or gender.

Transgender elders aren’t the only ones stymied by sex-segregated services. There are few support groups for older battered men, for instance, and homeless older women have fewer options than homeless men. However, transgender people daily face barriers to services divided by sex and/or gender, for things from public toilets to some religious services. Those who provide elders referrals need to understand what the options are when the needed service is limited to one sex and/or gender. This workshop was developed by service provider/trainers who are very experienced with sex- or gender-segregated services, and coming up with options that can still meet clients’ needs. A very popular workshop for professionals who work with transgender people (and hence face these problems daily), this workshop may be particularly useful for aging service providers who only occasionally have to confront what to do when an older client is not the “right” sex or gender for a needed service.
