Munson's work on violence against transgender and gender non-conforming individuals is groundbreaking\, stressing the intersectionality between complex components of identity\, experience\, and societal constructs that can both spur violence\, as well as catalyze healing for individuals and communities. He is passionate about engaging professionals to embrace these complexities and learn key skills to better serve their clients/constituents. Loree Cook-Daniels has been training about and working on policy changes to better address the needs of members of the transgender community since 1995. Prior to that\, she worked for more than a decade on elder abuse and domestic violence issues. The two came together in 2004\, when FORGE founded its Transgender Sexual Violence Project. This project was supported by Grant No. 2011-TA-AX-K121 awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women\, U.S. Department of Justice. The opinions\, findings\, conclusions\, and recommendations expressed in this publication/program/exhibition are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Department of Justice\, Office on Violence Against Women.

SUMMARY:Violence and Trauma in the Lives of Transgender Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Description: Although the data about transgender elders and trauma is still limited\, the research that does exist indicates both high levels of traumatic history and significant implications for health and wellness. Many transgender and gender non-conforming individuals experience higher than average abuse\, violence and neglect than non-transgender peers throughout their lifespan. This interactive workshop will share available data and focus on its service implications of working with transgender older adults who are often hesitant or unwilling to access care\, live with higher rates of mental and physical health conditions\, need the sensitivity of both trauma- and trans-informed caregivers\, and who may need support with key social and interpersonal skills to effectively receive the care they need. Multiple additional resources will be shared. Objectives: As a result of this session\, participants will be able to: List types of trauma transgender older adults are more likely to experience; Identify some of the long-term health and mental health consequences these trauma experiences may lead to; Explain why trauma histories may make transgender older adults less likely to access services; and Identify additional resources to support both service providers and transgender older adults themselves. Presenters: Loree Cook-Daniels and michael munson

SUMMARY:Social Support
DESCRIPTION:June's social support meeting: Where did binary sex come from\, and where should it go? Guest Speaker: Cary Costello Description: In every world society\, some people are born intersex\, and some people don't identify with the sex assigned to them at birth. Whether these people will have difficult or easy lives\, be fully socially accepted or live at the social margins\, varies widely across cultures and between times. In Western societies it has been complicated by an ideology of binary sex and gender: that people are "naturally" born with one of two different sets of genitals\, and that which set they have will determine their "natural" gender. We will explore where this ideology originated\, how it spread\, and how it complicates the lives of intersex individuals\, genderqueer people\, and trans folks with binary gender identities. We'll also think about what could be done to improve the situation. Open rap is from 6:00 - 7:15pm Open rap is the time to connect connection with fellow Trans+ and SOFFA individuals. This gently facilitated time is especially devoted to exploring the issues you bring in – sharing your experiences and stories\, asking questions\, seeking referrals\, gathering resources. SUMMARY:Social Support
DESCRIPTION:August's social support meeting: Street violence\, safety and dealing with the police Guest speaker: Attorney Laura Sette Description: Anti-transgender violence — occurring on the street\, at home\, at work\, or anywhere else — is more prevalent than most of us like to acknowledge. We will briefly address general street safety for trans+ and SOFFA individuals (always keeping in mind that our actions are not to blame for the friction or fists initiated by others). Attorney Laura Sette will then address the challenges of if\, when and how to involve the police in anti-transgender violence\, recognizing that the police may be less than helpful (at best) or part of the problem (at worst). Ample time for questions and answers will allow for discussion about specific concerns and challenges. Open rap is from 6:00 - 7:15pm Open rap is the time to connect connection with fellow Trans+ and SOFFA individuals.
