Day 5 – Become Trauma Informed
Become (and help others become) trauma-informed.
Have you heard of the ACE study? If not, you owe it to yourself and everyone else to learn about it. It showed that traumatic events in childhood were absolutely and strongly linked to mid- and late-life physical as well as mental health problems, including premature death. This is particularly important news for trans people, who report higher levels of childhood abuse than do non-trans people. Although this sounds scary, in fact it shows us how and why we need to begin healing past traumas, our own and others’. Here’s where to get started:
- Check out the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website on the study: http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/acestudy/
- Read Donna Jackson Nakazawa’s Childhood Disrupted: How Your Biography Becomes Your Biology, and How You Can Heal, (2015, Atria Books). Nakazawa takes this scientific breakthrough and explains in plain language not only what it means, but also what to do about it.
