Sheltering Transgender Women: Providing Welcoming Services

FORGE welcomed another opportunity to work with the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence in creating this new Technical Assistance Guidance document: Sheltering Transgender Women: Providing Welcoming Services (September 2014).

This Technical Assistance Guidance highlights effective strategies for integrating trans women into shelter, building on the knowledge that most shelter staff and allied professionals have already developed practice, familiarity, and skill in providing shelter services to women.

The primary focus of this paper is on women who have socially transitioned and are currently living the majority or all of the time as women. We recognize that many trans women are unable to present as female all of the time and even more trans-feminine people either do not wish to socially, medically, or legally transition or have genders that are outside of the binary female and male.
