TDOR: Call for Submissions
Every November, communities across the world join together to mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance with vigils, marches, candles, speeches, prayers, and moments of silence. Milwaukee’s Transgender Day of Remembrance – held at 7:00pm on Monday, November 19, 2012 at UW-Milwaukee – will involve all of those components. . . . AND words from members of our community.
Trans* and SOFFA (Significant Others, Friends, Family and Allies) lives are frequently touched by anti-trans violence and hate. Some have directly experienced physical, emotional, and/or spiritual harm. Some move through the world fearing what might happen. Some have witnessed the short and long term effects that anti-trans bias and violence has on our friends, our family, and our community. Trans* and SOFFA individuals also embody enormous quantities of strength, creativity and resilience, often thriving even after experiencing hardship, pain, and challenge.
Share with FORGE — and with the Milwaukee community — your reflections on, theories about, or constructs around the Transgender Day of Remembrance; how anti-trans* bias impacts (impacted) your life; how communities are affected when violence occurs. . . . . .
We want to hear your words about:
- Violence, hate, and fear
- Resilience, healing, and hope
Length: 600-2000 words [Note: If you prefer spoken word to written word — feel free to submit a video, up to 10 minutes in length]
November 2, 2012 Extended to November 15, 2012
How to submit: email to AskFORGE [at] forge-forward [dot] org
Selected works will be read (by you or by someone else, if you prefer) at the Milwaukee Transgender Day or Remembrance event on November 19, 2012. Submissions will also be posted on the FORGE website, so a broader audience will be able to access and benefit from your words.
We want to hear from you.
Your voice is important in making our community whole and healthy.
